Will that figure fit? Measure width as well as height

A figure can fit under a shelf and still crowd every neighbour on it. Height is only one part of a display plan. Arms, hair, props and bases can make a pose wider or deeper than the headline height suggests.

Measure the display footprint, not just the figure

Before placing a preorder, write down the usable width, depth and height of the shelf. Measure between the actual dividers and doors, not the outside dimensions of the cabinet. Then compare those clearances with the manufacturer's product dimensions and the shape shown in official photos. If only height and maximum width are published, treat depth as an open question until you can confirm it.

Anis is a good example

Kotobukiya describes its 1/4-scale Anis: Sparkling Summer figure as approximately 22 cm high even in a seated pose, with a maximum width of about 28 cm. The width is the more surprising number: a space planned for a 22 cm-tall figure could still be too narrow. Kotobukiya's photos show how the pose, hair, jacket and base spread across the display area. See the manufacturer's article and images for the actual shape.

Leave practical clearance

  • Beside the figure: allow space so hair, accessories and paint do not touch another collectible.
  • In front: make sure the shelf door closes without pressing on the base or projecting parts.
  • Above: leave room to lift the figure in and out without catching delicate details.
  • Behind: check whether the preferred viewing angle needs more room than a straight-on pose.

A quick paper template can help: mark the confirmed dimensions on a sheet, place it on the shelf, and test the space before the figure arrives. Do not treat a template as exact when the manufacturer has not published depth; use it to identify what still needs checking.

Plan for the view, too

The point of a display is to enjoy the sculpt. Kotobukiya calls attention to Anis's back and layered jacket as well as her front view, so placing the figure tightly into a corner may hide details you bought it to see. Try the intended viewing angle with another object of similar footprint before deciding where the figure will live.
